93 PEOPLE DIED OF DROWNING IN 

NEW ZEALAND DURING 2012 

  

• This is the second lowest annual toll on record (equal to 2006). 
• This is a 30% decrease from the 2011 toll (132). 

in Auckland

• 24 residents drowned in NZ 
• 90% of drownings in the region were Auckland residents

Value on preventing a drowning death

Various studies indicate that the willingness of society to prevent all the deaths due to drowning is around 0.5% of NZ GDP (ref 1988 study by PWC for ACC)
