Provisional Statistic Drowning in 2013

81 people died of drowning in New Zealand in 2013

• This is the lowest annual toll since records began in 1980.
• This is a 17% decrease from the 2012 toll (98).
• Five regions (Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, Northland and Otago) had increased drowning tolls
from 2012.
• Auckland (16) recorded its lowest drowning toll since 2006 (14).
• For the second year running, both Tasman and Gisborne have both recorded zero drowning fatalities.
